St Hilda of Whitby

No Catholic endeavour would be complete without a patron, and Anastasia Press is dedicated to the wonderful English saint, St. Hilda of Whitby - Patron saint of learning, culture and poetry.

St. Hilda, (c. 614 – 680) began her life in wealth as a princess but followed her calling to religious life at 33, entering a convent In Northumbria.

She was later chosen to become the abbess of a double monastery at Hartlepool, (a monastery with two houses, one for men and one for women) and went on to be the founding abbess of a second double monastery at Whitby.

She was known for her wisdom, her sage counsel to kings and bishops, her emphasis on scriptural study, and her care for the poor.
